Salient: Victoria University Students' Paper. Vol. 30, No. 8. 1967.

Those curious conservatives

Those curious conservatives

Sirs, A freind of mine, on reading M. C. Rowlands' "Poem To Peter Quennell" in the June 2, 1967, number of Salient immediately penned the following:

Poem To M. C. Rowlands

There are movements of the masses,
There are movements of the bowels, And the product of the latter is the same
As the prattle of the comrades and their tame trained clucking fowls,
Who consider our survival but a game.

Murray Rowlands (presumably the bard M. C. Rowlands) and his associates referred to on the same page as having some proprietary interst to on the "Leftist Upsurge" would do well to heed these sentiments so spontaneously expressed. Most New Zealanders with whom I come in contact appear to share these sentiments about the curious conservatives of 1930 intellectual vintage who pose as "New Leftists."

T. U. Allerhand.
