Board Says Act Now

Board Says Act Now

Salient Reporter

"Students should take steps now to get a vacation job," Mr. A. T. Mitchell, Secretary of the Appointments Board, told Salient.

The Appointments Board has been looking for jobs for students. It has sent nearly 10,000 circulars to employers and has advertised in the newsletters of various employers and trade organisations.

Mr. Mitchell told Salient students should:

1.Try immediately to return to last year's job. Some employers are prepared to engage only students employed previously.
2.If last year's job is not available, do not just wait for a suitable job to appear on the Board's notice board. Use your own initiative in seeking opportunities in the industry in which you have some experience, or elsewhere. There are business directories available at the Board Office.
3.In making your own inquiries, also ask whether there are any further vacancies of which the Board could be advised. The Board cannot create vacancies, it can only solicit and endeavour to be fully informed on whatever vacancies do exist.
4.To help your individual inquiries the Board may post details of employers with whom there are definitely no vacancies.
5.Do not be fussy. Although an outdoor job may appeal more than clerical work, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
6.A lower paid job in your home town may allow you to save more money when the cost of board is considered.
7.Students intending to study part-time next year should enter permanent jobs immediately after finals.
8.The Board would welcome any suggestions and information on likely areas of employment which might be suitable for students. For example, groups of students might canvass some of the more affluent suburbs for odd jobs and gardening. If kept informed, the Board could assist In co-ordinating such activities to avoid duplication.
9.Finally, as from November 20, a register will be opened of students unable to find vacation work. Special attention can then be given to these people.
