Support for appeal pleases chairman

Support for appeal pleases chairman

The scale on which the Halls of Residence Appeal had been supported has pleased the chairman of the standing committee, Professor S. N. Slater.

More than $400,000 has been raised since the appeal began in August, last year.

Although this fell short of the original $700,000 target, it meant more than one hostel could now be built, Professor Slater said.

But the Halls of Residence Foundation did not regard the present sum as final as donations were still coming in at a satisfactory rate.

When the appeal was completed, it was hoped accommodation for 512 students would be available.

To provide this, three hostels — Everton Hall, Newman Hall and Trinity College — will be built and Helen Lowry Hall and Victoria House will be extended.

Work would not begin on the new halls, however, until working drawings had been prepared and the University Grants Committee had gained approval for the Government subsidy, Professor Slater said.

The foundation has agreed to give a grant to Helen Lowry Hall, from the appeal, for alterations on its temporary site at 82-88 Hanson Street, as it was now providing board for 80 students instead of the original total of 38.
