Russian club's first meeting

Russian club's first meeting

"Bring your Balalaikas" was the notice which attracted many students to an hour of coffee, Russian music and conversation, organised by the University's new Russian Club.

Craig Wrightson, apparently the only balalaika-playing student in the university, promised to play for the club at a future date.

In spite of the lack of balalaikas, a Russian mood prevailed while students listened to Russian records and enjoyed the continental cakes provided by Professor Koutaissoff.

The first Russian club to be formed at Victoria. 'Kruzhok' [Little Circle] will be purely cultural in function.

Weekly meetings, similar to the French 'the dansant', and the German 'Kaffeestunds' will be held.

Film evenings, and possibly a Russian choir, are planned.

The staff gave full support to Philip Safferey and Dora van Walt during the early stages of the club's foundation.

The club's president was very pleased by the obvious enthusiasm shown by all present at the first meeting.

Mr. Smirnoff, from the Soviet Legation, was also present.

A telegram was sent to Professor Danilow, now in Auckland, telling him of the club's formation, and of his honorary membership.
