Cock

A student seller of Cock magazine was told by a petty Sub official "You can't sell Cock and Salient on the same day in the foyer of the Sub because they create a fire danger. When told of this, Cock editor Chris Wheeler said "Strike one Cock against a Salient ..."

A pension for Owen

Staff member overheard at a recent wine and cheese evening; "When I left Auckland in 1957 for Oxford, Owen Gager was there making mountains out of molehills. I returned last year to find him doing exactly the same thing at Victoria. Friends had told me that nothing was the same in New Zealand anymore, but Gager hasn't changed ... talk about professional students!"

If Gager stays at Victoria much longer the Students' Association will be marching to Parliament demanding old age pensions for students.

White for NZUSA?

Doug White, presently president of VUWSA. drafted out a press statement the other day. He handed it to vice-president Dan Bradshaw to read to the "Evening Post" before he picked up an error. Doug had called himself president of NZUSA.

Caught

Overheard at anti-Government demonstration outside Parliament, just after a student had been arrested.

Policeman A: "Just got another one. Don't know what for, though."

Policeman B (grinning): "We got him. anyway."

How white is your ... ?

From Paul Johnson the New Statesman. Brilliant to the top of his boots' was Lloyd George's comment on Haig. I've often thought the same about General Westmoreland. who now fades, unlamented, from the stricken field of Vietnam. Before leaving, I see, he paid a farewell call on the Prime Minister of Thailand, who promptly presented him with the Most Exalted Order of the White Elephant.

Riot by committee

The battle for Student Power is in the Committee stage at Victoria right now. It may never get any further ... But if we know the results committees usually produce ...

Scraping

A blind American law student has been re-classified 1A by his draft board. He had been classified 2-S until this year despite annual reminders that he should be 4-F.

"All I can say is we must be losing the war." he said.

He has 30 days to appeal.
