Stagnant Water

page 7

Stagnant Water

Grey, rain-grained clouds will overflow
To release from aimlessness
For we have wandered the slimed streets of suburbs,
Imprisoned in the trough of mind.
Not the stone of the glacial stream,
But the slime of the stagnant pool.
Each pitter riple splosher drop
Means hope:
Meaning, friend, commitment;
Make for us a sparkling splash, not a stagnant pool,
And fill the streams and streets and fall in glistening drops
From winter's fingers in the pale sunlight.

—G. P. Soutre

The editor of the monthly YC programme "Poetry" intends to devote the August edition of this programme to writing by university students. He wants to receive as many poems as possible. Anyone interested, please drop contributions into Salient office, or send to D. Delany, NZBC, marked "Attention: Mrs Cloud" to arrive not later than Friday, July 26. Contributions should be clearly marked with name and address of writer. Contributors who are successful will be paid and will be given the opportunity to record their own poems.
