Ski lodge extensions open

Ski lodge extensions open

The new University Ski Lodge extension was officially opened on 13 July by Dr Taylor, Vice-Chanceller of the University.

Present at the opening were club members, the Patron Dr I. C. Fleming, local Ruapehu residents who had assisted the club and preseidents of other ski clubs with lodges on the Mount.

The opening function took the form of a cocktail party organised and paid for by the members present.

As the President, Mike Corkin, pointed out, it was only by the monetary contributions and participation in work parties by the ordinary club members that made the completion of the extension possible.

Since the start of excavations on January 13 this year 25 work parties had been held, 20 of them on consecutive weekends with an average of 20 members attending each time.

Mention was also made of the financial assistance received from the Student's Association.

A week later, the annual club races were held in slightly icy conditions which only the more competent skiers were able to handle.

Results:

Women—Mary McLauchlin, 1.58 sec., 1; Gay Blyth. 2 min. 0.5 sec., 2; Beltina Prior, 2 min. 48.5 sec, 3.

Men—John Armstrong, 1 min. [unclear: -] sec, 1; Peter Zander, 1 min. 16 sec. 2; David White. 1 min. 21 sec, 3.

The club also entered that weekend in the Ruapehu Regional champs with Gay Blyth and Mary McLauchlin being placed third and fourth, respectively, in the women's giant slalom.

John Armstrong was placed fourth overall in the Men's giant slalom and slalom.

These results augur well for Winter Tournament.
