Opinions expressed in Salient are not necessarily those of VUWSA.

Relatively to parliamentary elections, municipal elections are not so very important, but they do select people who will exert some influence on the development of the municipalities, and on the organisation of the various services they provide.

It is useful to have as many younger people as possible, in positions of such influence.

As part of the problem of the "student image" is that students often appear only interested in big and exciting issues—which are too important for them to have any real understanding of anyway—it would be good public relations to associate students with the smaller matters of municipalities.

The Labour Party seems to have cooperated by placing two students on their ticket, Yvonne Grove and Tony Haas. It is now necessary to capitalise on this by making it widely known they are students. This requires Students'

Association endorsement of their candidatures.

At a meeting of the Students' Association Executive at lunchtime yesterday the National Affairs Officer was instructed to look into this possibility and to report back to the Executive on it.

One argument that might be brought up against this course is that there is nobody to endorse on the Citizens ticket. This, however, is only hard luck to the Citizens for not choosing a fuller cross-section of society for their ticket. (The Citizens are also open to attack for putting up a candidate against the best Citizens' mayor Wellington has known for many years.)

The only other argument against endorsing these two nominations is that such endorsements might not reflect the true opinion of students. This is the sort of gutless attitude which if carried to its logical end would allow the Executive to take no action on anything.
