Voting Percentage Falls Back

Student demonstration at parliament

One of the four speakers addressing the Demonstration outside Parliament Buildings on the first Saturday of the Holidays.

Over 300 students marched from the University to Parliament where they were joined by over 80 members of the Committee on Vietnam.

The march was preceeded by a raly in E.006. where the demonstrators were haranged by Con Bollinger, Alister Taylor and Ken Findlay, serenaded by Steve Robinson, Max Winnie and Barry Lienart, and blasted blues by the Capel Hopkins Blues Dredge.

"The rally's turned out very well," said one of the organisers.

The percentage of members of the student body who voted in this year's elections dropped from 40% to 31.8%, according to the Returning Officer, Denis Phelps.

"But that is not very different to a fairly established pattern prior to last year," he said.

"More people voted last year because Gerard Curry attracted many votes from those who don't normally vote.

"There were more candidates last year too.

"And Salient published more about student politics."
