Reading Knowledge Decision Ratified

Reading Knowledge Decision Ratified

The Curriculum Committee of the University Grants Committee has now ratified a decision taken earlier this year by the University Council and Professorial Board, that this compulsory element of the degree course should be abandoned.

In effect this decision means that any student who has passed nine units of a B.A. degree, and who otherwise fulfils the course requirements, may at 1st January 1970 apply to have the B.A. degree conferred

However, from 1970 onwards, students offering English as their only Stage III unit will be required to pass either Stage I of a foreign language, or Reading Knowledges of two languages other than English.

This requirement does not aplpy to students who passed English III in 1969 or earlier.

This new regulation will bring into line the requirements for both undergraduates and honours students of English.

Until now students wishing to proceed to an honours course in English have been required to fulfil a foreign language pre requisite.
