Publications Officer

Publications Officer

Tony Wasley

I am standing for this position for several reasons - the main ones being an interest in a) the particular position [unclear: of] Publications Officer b) the workings (and lack of it) of the executive and student bodies in general c) an attempt to break students away from a pure academic role and form a morel diversified varsity d) furthering my own ambitions and self preservation in this present, mucked up world.

I am not a greatly political person, neither radical nor conservative, but basically a realist. A second year student with no pre-determined course of study and life style, I am part of no present elite in varsity and do not intend to become part of any of them am anti-apartheid, anti-american and communism, pro-ecology action, anti-war, against much of our present social life style in NZ. These are my views and not simply going along with other students.

In these elections vote for somebody whoever the hell it is.

[unclear: At] a time when we are particularly [unclear: vnerable] to the whim of the local [unclear: press,] our publications, especially [unclear: Salient,] are extremely important to [unclear: u] because they are independent, and though this we can have open criticism [unclear: o] all issues of concern. This [unclear: independence] and openess must be not [unclear: merely] maintained, but fostered wherever possible, and one of my major aims as Publications officer would be to co-operate with the [unclear: technical] staff to the limit of fairness in [unclear: anieving] this.

Publications are very often taken for [unclear: gunted] — they just appear, but there [unclear: is little] campus involvement. If [unclear: posse] I would try to encourage cultural [unclear: and] other clubs to contribute in some [unclear: wy,] for only by seeking to involve [unclear: students] in activities can we attempt [unclear: t] humanize our campus, and bring a [unclear: it] of enjoyment around the place.

[unclear: As] far as broader policies are [unclear: concern-] my prime interest is in civil [unclear: liber]. To me this is our means to do [unclear: whatever] we want to do, and should [unclear: or] freedom of expression or [unclear: movement] be limited then the whole of life [unclear: suddenly] becomes very much more [unclear: nfined.] I would encourage publications to comprehensively cover our rights, and the reason for and constitutional importance of rigorously maintaining them. If the Rugby Tour [unclear: ges] ahead next year, this will be [unclear: paramount] because liberties will probably receive the biggest test for a long time.

I am against violence in protest [unclear: part] because this is an infringement on [unclear: other']s rights and priveleges, and I think we can only try to maintain our [unclear: own] rights if we respect those of others.

[unclear: I] elected to the position of publications officer, I would continue [unclear: Saint] along the lines developed by the technical staff and work with them [unclear: and] students in achieving any implements thought desirable. My knowledge of this position is not [unclear: great,] but as a full time student I am repared to learn and gain experience.
