John Mowbray

John Mowbray

Whilst I am standing for the position of Sports Officer, it must be appreciated by students, that the position like all Executive appointments is one of discussing all matters coming before Executive and therefore must be regarded as Political rather than a pure responsibility portfolio.

As Sports Officer my main concern would be to deal with what I consider the following problem areas:

1.Finance. Club grants are evaporating away in affiliation fees to Parent associations which are essentially administration charges. Net effect equals greatly reduced amount for essential gear and facilities. Concessions for university sports bodies are therefore a must.
2.Club membership. I would continue the current Student Policy of non, subsidation of non Student sport. Whilst non students should not be completely excluded from participating in Varsity Sport, we must ensure they contribute their fair share of expenses.
3.Clubs must be urged to participate in such Public relations ventures such as the forthcoming club day to be held in Studass. It is only fair that Clubs be prepared to demonstrate the effectiveness of Student money spent in their interest.
4.Eligibility; I would urge an even greater tightening up on the eligibility of only bonafide students being selected for the higher levels of Varsity representation i.e. Sports Tournaments and Overseas Tours.
5.International Sport: Racial Policies have no place in an activity based on merit performance, and as Sports Officer I would press for cancellation of all such contacts.

My previous experience includes being Capping Controller 1970,72, and being on the Capping Committee 1970,71,72. I was Drinkin Horn Controller 1972. I am currently a student rep on the Commerce Faculty.
