A Contribution from the "Christian Union"

When people are not complaining that life is dull then they are always wishing it was. This is because when life seems dull it is because there is nothing to do and when there is something to do it invariably proves too much for us. Consequently we are always on the lookout (in the boring moments) for someone or preferably something to occupy us that seems impossible and is therefore fascinating and yet is not impossible but within our capabilities and therefore engrossing. Since we all of us at some stage or other dream the impossible dream there is no doubt — therefore — some way to realise it.

Now what does this mean for us in life who are eminently practical and for whom even the impossible should be imminently realisable? It means the chance in the next eight days to come to know and love (since to know the truth is to love the truth) Mr Michael Griffiths.

Born Cardiff, 1928 (which makes him 25 years older and hopefully wiser than the average 20-year-old student). This man is one whose life speaks and to meet him face to face is to know what his life is saying; for we all of us, as we live by the choices we make, shape OUR lives into some sort of order.

The socially accepted orders of this man's life are his four children and his wife, Valerie, who has an Oxford degree in Theology. He is a Christian and committed to writing various booklets; "Consistent Christianity" "Give Up Your Small Ambitions", 'Take Off Your Shoes"... as well as being a top-flight wanderer for the Lord from Cambridge to Scotland to Ireland to Japan to Europe again to the United State, Canada, South Africa, Australia and us (i.e. NZ, though some say the initials almost mean the same nowadays), then the United Kingdom and the Far East.

But the truth will be written in his life and to see if this man is great in the kingdom of God — to see whether as Jesus hoped he actually does live up to what he preaches. So come along all you dreamers and screamers, fliers and failures, Christians and janitors, come and hear, see assess, love, clean up after Mike Griffiths when he speaks in the Student Union Building from April 29 — May.

"You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?" Matthew 7:1 7. Jesus (paraphrased).
