But whatever might be the exact value of a knight's fee, he who held a portion of land so denominated was bound, if called upon, to attend his lord to the wars on horseback, armed as a knight, for forty days in every year, at his own expense; which attendance was his rent or service for the land he held f. And he who held half a knight's fee was only bound to attend twenty days, and so in proportion g.
