I, John William Richard Guilding, of Shortland, in the Province of Auckland, Declaration of J. W. R. Guilding. Colony of New Zealand, a duly licensed Native Interpreter, do hereby solemnly and sincerely declare—
1. That I was present together with Samuel Brennan, a constable in the Armed Constabulary, at present of Hikutaia in the said province and colony, and did see Wiremu Tangapo and Rangihoro Paetai, mentioned and described in the within-written Deed, duly sign and execute the same by adhibiting their respective marks thereto.
2. That the marks or crosses "x x" set opposite to the names of the said Wiremu Tangatapo and Rangihoro Paetai were made by them in my presence and in the presence of the said Samuel Brennan, who is a male adult.
3. That I was present together with the said Samuel Brennan, and did see Mikaere Te Akeake, mentioned and described in the within-written Deed, duly sign and execute the same in my presence and in that of the said Samuel Brennan.
4. That the signature Mikaere Te Akeake to the said Deed subscribed is of the proper handwriting of the said Mikaere Te Akeake.
5. That I was present together with James Mackay the Younger, of Shortland aforesaid, Land Agent, and did see Te Mene Paetai, mentioned and described in the within Deed duly sign and execute the same in my presence and in the presence of the said James Mackay the Younger.
6. That the signature "Te Mene Paetai," subscribed to the said Deed, is of the proper handwriting of the said Te Mene Paetai.
7. That the signatures J. W. R. Guilding, Samuel Brennan, and James Mackay, Jr., subscribed to the said Deed are of the proper handwriting of the said John William Richard Guilding, Samuel Brennan, and James Mackay the Younger.
8. That immediately before the execution of the said Deed by the said hereinbefore mentioned persons parties to the same, I did faithfully interpret the same to them and each of them into the Maori language, and that my translation was correct, and was understood by all of them. And I make this solemn declaration conscientiously believing the same to be true, and by virtue of "The Native Lands Act, 1865," "The Native Lands Act, 1867," "The Native Lands Act Amendment Act, 1868," "The Native Lands Act, 1869," "The Native Lands Act Amendment Act, l870," and "The Justices of the Peace Act, 1866."
