Maori Deeds of Land Purchases in the North Island of New Zealand: Volume One

Translation

Translation.

This Deed1857. 17 October.Manukau and Waikato District. written on this seventeenth (17) day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty seven (1857) is a paper of the full consent of us the chiefs and people of Ngatiteata on behalf of ourselves our relatives and our descendants who may be borne after us entirely to surrender a certain portion of our Opoia And Ramaroa No. I. Land to Victoria the Queen of England and to the Kings and Queens who may succeed her for ever. The principal names of the land are Opoia and Ramaroa. These are the boundaries commencing at Pakaraka and at Rangiriri and running thence in the course of the said stream to Awakauhia and on to Orowaiti where it turns inland and runs to Tautukuroa crossing at Kitekau it runs to Wareroa turning in a northerly direction it runs to Katoutauru to Papatairite and to Hikurangi thence direct to te Ahikai and to Ukauka to Whareraurekau to Paenoa and on to te pa o Puninga where it joins the boundary of the land formerly sold by us to the Queen and along that boundary to Matakawau to the waters of Manuka and along the shore of the Manukau harbor till the boundary meets at Pakaraka.
Two sections reserved, 60 acres each. Two sections of sixty acres each in the bush of Ramaroa are reserved for ourselves; one for Karaurea Paikea the other for Kerei Aihepene.

And in consideration of our consent entirely to give up this portion of our land Victoria the Queen of England agrees on her part to give us for our Land the sum of Three hundred and eighty five pounds (£385) One hundred and fifty pounds (£150) of these monies we have this day received.

Now we have entirely and for ever given up this land to Victoria the Queen of England to the Kings or Queens who may succeed her for ever, with its streams waters timber stones and everything appertaining to the said land for ever.

Receipt for £150. And in testimony of the receipt of these monies from Mr. McLean (tho' paid to us by the hands of Mr. Searancke) on this seventeenth day of October 1857 we hereunto sign our names and marks.

And in testimony of the consent of the Queen of England on her part to all the conditions of this Deed the name of Donald McLean Esquire Land Purchase Commissioner of New Zealand is hereunto, subscribed.
