The Rhodes Scholarship

James Allan Thomson, B. Sc., of Otago University has been elected the First Rhodes Scholar.

We heartily congratulate Mr. Thomson on his success, and Otago University upon having produced one so worthy to represent New Zealand at the University of Oxford. No surer earnest of his future success can be found than the fact that Mr. Thomson was preferred to such men as were nominated against him. Victoria College believes that the man who was preferred to P. W. Robertson will do honour to himself, to the University, and to New Zealand. Mr. Thomson's career will be watched with the greatest interest, and we wish him every success in the larger life which he is about to enter.

The selection Committee consisted of the Governor, Sir Robert Stout (as Chief Justice and Chancellor) and Professors Maclaurin (Victoria College,) Evans (Canterbury College,) Benham (Otago University,) Talbot-Tubbs (Auckland.)
