The Spike or Victoria College Review 1940

Swimming Club

Swimming Club

Last season, membership in the Swimming Club fell considerably owing to members joining up with various branches of the Forces. We missed especially the help and enthusiasm of Mr. R. Bradshaw.

Club nights were held as usual each Wednesday evening at Thorndon Baths. At these meetings all kinds of swimmers were catered for, it being one of the Club's principles to encourage learners and those who swim for pleasure, rather than against a stop-watch.

This year we were unable to enter a full team for the Peek Shield Harbour Race, but we wish to congratulate Mr. Hugill on his good performance in this race.

Two water-polo teams were entered in the B and C Grade competitions. These teams were, however, disorganised through lack of regular players and failed to achieve a combination which is necessary for success in water-polo. We should like to see more younger members taking an interest in this branch of our activities.

Our tournament team was on the whole stronger than it has been for some years past. Lane (Massey) swam splendidly to finish second in a very closely-contested race in the men's 100 yards, and also gained second place in the Men's backstroke. Taylor scored a second in the men's 440 yards and Miss Hefford was also placed second in the 100 yards women's breast-stroke. Our Tournament team was as follows: Misses Malcolm, Walton and Hefford; Messrs. Lane (Massey), Taylor and McKay.
