When bombers blossomed overhead
we dived for fox-holes out of bed
and seconds staggered into hours.

But now the very years are days
and time alone is what one pays,
and were those aircraft flowers?

Like alien flowers against the stars
the symbols of mind's bitter wars
thoughts fall like bombs.
Upon the airstrips, jungle, unreal palms
explosions menaced major harms
to bodies that were tombs.

Happier then, in ignorance,
we heard no music for life's dance
and only longed to live.
But now that we are faced with life
how preferable that former strife
when war had peace to give.
