Applications for two field assistant/geologists were called for in the Geology Department. The Antarctic Research Committee selected Allis and Crump to fill the vacancies. Allis was made responsible, on behalf of Dr. T. Shirtcliffe (Physics Department, V.U.W.), for undertaking the physical limnological measurements of Lake Vanda. Crump indicated she would map Shapeless Mountain as part of a planned Ph.D. thesis on the Mawson Volcanobreccia.

At the request of Dr. L.D, McGinnis, the co-ordinator of the Dry Valley Drilling Project (DVDP), Adams and Cole were included in the VUWAE programme. Adams was required as an assistant geologist to aid the site geologists of DVDP while Cole was expected to work with Kyle.

Messrs, Allis, Freeman, Hunt, Keys and Kyle, and Mrs, Crump attended the Antarctic Training Week at Tekapo in August 1972. All members enjoyed themselves and appreciated the opportunity to meet and talk with other members of the 1972/73 NZARP programme.
