FINANCE, EQUIPMENT AND GENERAL PROVISIONS

Finance

A grant from the University Grants Committee was used to pay for food, clothing, camping items, travel and freight, and to cover insurance of personnel and instruments. The University Council provided financial support for Adams, All is and Keys.

Field Gear

Many items were already available in VUWAE store. They included ice axes, sleeping bags, anoraks, Mead tents, and kitchen gear. New purchases to replace worn or broken equipment were made, Antarctic Division provided expensive or specialist equipment, including motor toboggans, sleds, polar tents, down clothing and radio transceivers, Antarctic Division also clothed D.S.I.R. personnel.

Food

In contrast to past VUWAE expeditions when food was purchased from Antarctic Division by the 20-man day food box, this year's expedition worked on a man-day basis and were charged a flat rate irrespective of whether in the field or at Scott Base. This means that any unused food is returned to Antarctic Division and not stored as the property of VUWAE as in previous years. The system should alleviate the necessity for VUWAE to purchase food to supplement the food boxes, however, as in the past fresh meat, canned fruit, and meat, cake and chocolate was purchased and used along with 20-man day food boxes. In future years Antarctic Division should be responsible for supplying many of these supplementary items.

Excess food remaining from past years when food was purchased by the food box is still stored in the old Antarctic VUWAE store, Antarctic Division indicated its intention to buy back this food; however, no agreement has been reached.
