I extend particular thanks to A.J. White for introducing me to the Orongorongo live-trapping study in late 1969, and particularly for his continuing assistance in many aspects of the work over the following six years. I am grateful to others who assisted me over 1969-76, including my colleagues in Ecology Division and a succession of vacation student helpers. I extend particular thanks to Dr B.J. Gill who provided invaluable assistance in handling the weighty analyses of a decade of population data.

M.J. Daniel kindly allowed me use of his data on seed production, while I thank him and Dr J.E.C. Flux for helpful discussions in the early stages of this analysis. I thank Mrs A. Fitzgerald, Dr R.E. Brockie and Dr P.E. Cowan for providing information from vegetation surveys.

I am most grateful to those of my colleagues who constructively commented on earlier drafts of this paper, namely Dr A.E. Bell, Dr R.E. Brockie, J. Clark, Dr P.E. Cowan, Dr D.G. Dawson, M. Efford and Dr J.A. Gibb, and to S. Pledger, Dr S. Roberts and J. Thompson for assistance with statistics; N. Black and M. Cooper kindly did all the typing.
