The Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs to the Prime Minister of New Zealand1
Your telegram of 20 December.
We are in full agreement with your estimation of the increased importance of the South Pacific air route and have already instructed page 288 our representatives in Washington to raise with the United States authorities the question of providing assistance in defence at Fiji, Canton and Christmas Islands.
We have now sent a further message to your telegram under reference so that your recommendations may be taken into [group omitted – account?] when this question is discussed.
