The author, W. E. Murphy, though of a New Zealand family, was brought up in England and enlisted (with his brother) in The New Zealand Anti-Tank Battery (later numbered the 34th) formed at Aldershot in October 1939. He served with this battery until September 1944, and from then until the end of the war was Divisional Artillery Historian. (He had acted as historian of the 7th Anti-Tank since March 1942.) Except for the Sangro and Orsogna fronts, he saw every major battlefield described in this history either just before, at the time, or soon afterwards. After the war he continued work on this history at Army Headquarters, Wellington, and from 1947 in War History Branch. He collaborated with the author, D. M. Davin, in the preparation of the history of the Crete campaign. Then he wrote the campaign history, The Relief of Tobruk. He now lectures in political theory and international relations in the Victoria University of Wellington and edits the journal Political Science.
