The author: P. W. Bates was born in New Plymouth in 1920, educated at the New Plymouth Boys' High School, and entered journalism with the Taranaki Herald in 1938. He went overseas in 1941 with the 7th Reinforcements, joined 25 Battalion, and was taken prisoner in July 1942. He escaped to Switzerland after the Italian Armistice in September 1943, and returned to New Zealand in December 1944. He returned to journalism, later became chief reporter on the Taranaki Daily News, and is at present with the Auckland Star.
