It strikes me that at all events you ought at once to print your correspondence with Lord Grey in the Chronicle. His answer to your application is so absurd, all things considered, that the mere publication of it would do good. But if you pointed out its absurdity in a letter to the Editor, so much the better.

Next I think you might properly and very usefully appeal to the Prime Minister or collective Government against the tyrannical secrecy of Lord Grey; for secrecy in such a case is page 124tyranny. It is prodigiously impolitic too, as forcing the colonists to forego the aid of friends in this conntry, and to rely solely on their own resistance to their Government, which is positive rebellion.

A grave appeal to Lord John would be very good. In your letter to the Editor you might say that you are appealing to the Pxime Minister. The Cape merchants are poor creatures: you are the organ of the colonists at home.
