The Founders of Canterbury

Copy of a letter from the Right Honorable W. E. Gladstone, M.P., to J. R Godley, Esq

Copy of a letter from the Right Honorable W. E. Gladstone, M.P., to J. R Godley, Esq.

Fasque, November 17, 1849.

My Dear Mr. Godley,

—I had heard of your intended voyage, with deep regret as to the necessity for it, somewhat mitigated by the consideration that New Zealand is likely to derive much benefit from your presence there. You are the man if any to put colonizing operations from this country into harmony with the Bishop. If he can be got to look at the New Zealand Company prospectively I hope all may go well.

However that may be, I have no hesitation, but on the contrary, much pleasure, in writing to him to commend you so far as I can, not only to his courtesy and kindness, but also to his thorough confidence. Such is the effect of the enclosed letter. Coleridge, if you are personally known to page 148him, could give you an introduction that would carry great weight.

I trust in God that you may be prosperous, and that ere long we may have you again among us with health and strength permanently restored.

With our kind regards to Mrs. Godley, I remain, always and very sincerely yours,

(Signed) W. E. Gladstone.
