John Hutt, Esq. Reigate, 19th December, 1849.

My Dear Hutt,

—Being sure that it has been for some time the deliberate intention of the Office to put an end to you, I rejoice that Lord Grey takes the anti-ballot ground. It is capital ground for us to fight upon. Don't say this; but get his letter; and then we shall know what to do.

I am persuaded that all the discussions and professions of civility have only been used as a means of duping you into the belief that the objections are bond fide. As long ago as seven weeks, when Agliohby dined at Hawes's, the purpose was formed of putting an end to you; and these objections have been devised since.

But say nothing: get the letter.
