The Founders of Canterbury

Tuesday night, 9th April, 1850

Tuesday night, 9th April, 1850.

My Dear Wynter,

—I must tell you that at last, just before I left Town at half-past five, the arrangement between the Association and the Company was completed, by which it is settled that the colony goes forward at all events; the most page 252injurious contingency, which produced a sort of palsy, being removed. At the public meeting, therefore, it will be announced that the first body of colonists will positively sail for their destination this coming autumn. Thanks to the head and heart combined of Lyttelton and Simeon in particular!

But the great present satisfaction was dashed by the grievous and most unexpected news, that Mr. Maddock declines. We cannot succeed without the Bishop. The anti-Puseyite run against us is too strong. After glorying in the downfall of the only lay obstacle, I am in dismay at the revival of the clerical one in all its force.
