“Sketch of a Tangi or mourning/ Maori women were the principal speakers/ and performers in turn for the days or time/ the deceased was laid out in state.”
Mt. Recto: (ink, R's hand) lower page
“Maori/women were always the Chief mourners/ the custom was in days gone by — that they should/ cut themselves with sharp shells, or obsidian, till/ they streamed tears of blood — sometimes/ tattooing dye was applied to the wounds thus/ perpetuating the signs of their grief/ (drawn on spot) H.G. Robley.”
Notes: “[Tangi at Matapihi] represents a Maori funeral ceremony with the laid out corpse of a woman of rank among the people of her tribe. The body dressed in its best array of mats, with head and hair decorated with a number of pigeon feathers, is reposing in the mahau, or porch, of a native house that has a low door, and drapings of dark blankets hanging from the ridge boards. A lamentation for the dead, or tangihangi, is being performed by the village people, who will continue thus until burial three or four days later. They are shown sitting and standing about the marae… while around the foot of the couch, known as an atamira, are the parents and husband of the deceased.” [Fildes:1921. p. 100].
