Carnival Capping Ceremony Programmes
This collection contains issues of “Carnival” the programme of the Victoria student graduation ceremony.
Victoria's graduation ceremony was initially known as 'capping day' before becoming a week long celebration. Victoria's graduation ceremonies were the college's closest encounter with Wellington city, with students parading through the city centre.
Carnival began with a performance at the Sydney Street schoolroom and soon moved to the city Town Hall. By the 1950s productions were held at the Wellington Opera House.
A feature of the Carnival ceremony was a student revue performance often using song to tease the College and lecturers. In later years this included targeting local and national personalities.
For a comprehensive history of student capping ceremonies please refer to Rachel Barrowman's Victoria University of Wellington 1899 ~ 1999 A History.
